A Bride’s Guide to Wedding Flowers
We love designing flowers for weddings, and the whole process starts with a consultation. This is when we meet face-to-face and talk about all the elements that go into creating your perfect wedding. All the details of dresses, invitations, venues, overall style of the wedding, feed into creating floral designs that will enhance and beautify your wedding. In order to put together a comprehensive quotation, there are some things we need to know. Below is a checklist, of sorts, to help you make sense of where we begin...
Things you need to know before your consultation:
Although you may have been planning your dream wedding since you a were a little girl, the missing part of that picture was the groom, so please don’t book a consultation if you’re not yet engaged!
The time of year will help determine the flowers that are in season and the overall look of your wedding, so please ensure you have a confirmed date for the wedding.
To be able to design beautiful flowers for your wedding, we need to know which venue(s) you are using, this will play a big part in the feel of your wedding. We can work to colour schemes already in place at your venue, or create something to contrast with the rooms you will be using.
This is a crucial factor in designing a bespoke wedding bouquet. The style of dress will help determine the best bouquet for you to carry. It could be anything from a hand tied bouquet, to a trailing bouquet, a pomander to an over-arm sheaf.
Your bridesmaids’ dress colour is a vital part of the jigsaw. Knowing the colour of these will help us create something that will really pop against their dresses.
Your likes and dislikes
It’s always lovely to include flowers that mean something to you; a childhood favourite, a grandmother’s perfume, the first flowers you were given. We also like to know which
flowers you dislike, so we can avoid them like the plague; no one wants to be confronted with an ugly flower when they look at their bouquet on the big day!
This is really important. So many brides come in and say ‘I’m not sure how much money we have for flowers’, and this makes it so difficult to design appropriately. If you say you don’t know your budget, trust me, we have no problem designing £3,000 table centres! So please have an idea of how much you want to spend. As a guide, flowers and decoration usually accounts for 10-15% of the entire wedding budget. As an example, if you are spending £20,000, typically flowers and decoration (linen, favours, chair covers) should account for £2,000-£3,000.
The best way to keep your budget down is to have a smaller wedding. The larger the wedding, the more flowers there should be.
We don’t recommend skimping on your bouquet or the table centres, these are your ‘power items’, high impact, very important designs. It’s your wedding, have the bouquet of your dreams!
People are going to be sat looking at your centrepieces all day, and into the evening. The table centres are going to give you a high level of impact and help pull your colour scheme and the feel of the wedding together. Although it sounds simple, think about the number of tables you plan to have, 8 tables, for example, at £100 each, is £800. You can see how quickly tables eat into your budget. Centrepieces account for 40%-50% of your flower/decor budget.
Areas where you can save money are buttonholes and corsages, you can provide these for just immediate family members, or those playing an active role in the ceremony (such as giving a speech or a reading). We encourage brides to think of the people that will be photographed together too, you don’t want everyone in a group shot to have a buttonhole, except for one person! Church/Ceremony decoration need not cost the earth. The wedding service takes up a relatively short period of time, and we recommend having one or two statement arrangements rather than filling every nook and cranny!
